“How do you know?” KJ asked. “I mean, they got it into him.”

“Dr. Green, you’re a b-b-better person to explain this.”

Dr. Green, now dressed in Earth clothes, stood up from where she was sitting behind one of the computer consoles that hid her completely from sight. As she spoke, she actually startled KJ.

“Based on your research on my DNA—“

“Dr. Green,” Jim said. She stopped speaking, thought for a moment and rephrased: “Based on MY research of YOUR DNA, the editing that I saw was more bigger than any technology I know about.”

“Maybe ‘more complicated’ is what you mean?” Jim said in a soft voice.

“Sure?” she said, smiling awkwardly at him.

“Your English has come a long way for such a short time, Doctor,” I said.

“Thanks,” she said, now giving me a slightly less awkward smile. Then she added: “It’s actually been… how many Earth cycle-parts, KJ?”

“Three months.”

“Three months?!?”

Jill spoke first: “It took us a while to build the tech we needed to find you. We had to retool the Accessory a bit to expand the range.”

Kate was next. “Then we had to figure out a way to get from the Fire Escape on that asteroid to the place, or the building, they were actually holding you in.  Then we had all kinds of problems with the 3D printer for the pressure suits. The one we managed to do came out dope but that’s why only KJ went in and Dot stayed in the car and Jill and I stayed here.”

“Printer problems? Even in the future?” I said.

“I know, right? I hate printers!” Kate said, smiling.

“How did you even know it was just a short drive from the Fire Escape to the facility I was in?”

“Dot reached out to us, during one of our supply runs back to Prime, explaining she’d heard from Wise that you might need a hand.”

“And I’ve got two hands!”

“Dad jokes. I assume you have other skills?” I asked.

“Plenty of skills—plenty of experience with the same kind of stuff Wise has dealt with. He even briefed me about everything he’s been helping you kids with.”

“Great, well, I’m just glad to know Wise is alive. So, now what?” I asked forgetting that I still wanted to have my DNA unedited.

“Well, we have two paths,” Jill began, “Either we dump all our resources into getting you normal again or we dump all our resources into fighting this invasion.”

“Oh fine, put it all back on me,” I said.
